I am kicking around a few aqauascaping ideas for my 150 6'x18" floor space.
One idea I had was making a barrier that is 3'-3 1/2' wide and 14" wide and 5" tall this way I can do the front of the tank about 1" of soil and 1/4 pea gravel cap with carpet type plants and crypts. Then the rear center of the tank about 4" soil and 1/4 cap with deep rooted plants like swords. The sides will be 2" soil and 1/4" cap with stem plants and bushy type plants. The barrier will be made out of garden lava rock siliconed together I think it's a good idea. Thoughts and feedback welcome. Eric |

I did something similar in a tank last year. It was only up a few months before I had to take it down, but it was lots of fun to build. The substrate in front was about 2", while the back was around 6". As you can see in the pics, I used the wood on hand to make it appear that roots were growing over my wall. You can see the journal here.

I had a 55 gallon I did some rock work back in 2008. The 12" depth killed me but with your 18" is should do great.

I am going to have to find another way, I made one of the walls last night and the silicon didn't stick to the lava rock at all. Guess it up to the mountains to find some good stacking rocks or maybe use plexi and hide it with slate or something.

I'll probably just make the back deeper and just stack the lava rock, I don't really know what kind of epoxy would be aquarium safe.
Right now i am trying to find a 55 gallon aquarium to put my fish in so I can go ahead and set this thing up. I'd hate to buy one just for a few weeks till the 150 cycles. I have some plastic flower bed edging that would make a good divider just have to figure out a way to hide it that looks good. Eric |

My first real planted tank:
(shoot, just realized I don't have a picture) And another very old one: ![]() And there are many others where I have used barriers like that. Last edited by CL; 10-09-2009 at 12:34 AM. |

Dewalltheway...
I would really like to know what kind of stones you used for your wall. I would also like to know what plants you have in your tank if possible. I have been trying to identify a few of them but they are a bit hard to see closely from the picture. Any input would be greatly appreciated... Thanks! |
