THe substrate is pretty shallow. It is just even with the top edge of the plastic bottom rim. Probably 3/4" is a good guess.
Here's another kind of cool picture from last week. This is an open spathe of the large Anubias barteri that I removed from the 55-gallon to another tank a little while ago because it was getting too big. ![]() It is substantially larger than the spathe of A. barteri var. nana (which has bloomed for me many times), but otherwise similar. ![]() If you look at the pictures that I have of this plants from a few weeks ago you can see the unopened developing spathe.

Oh I haven't been back to this this thread in a while. Now I have a quick update. I recently moved this tank out of our house and put it back together at a local garden center shop.
![]() Here is a better view of the tank. ![]() The plants have been in there for a few days. I only added the hardscape (stones and manzanita driftwood) last night. I have planned it as a simple and (I hope) undemanding system. I replaced most of the crypts with somewhat more resilient houseplant-type tropicals, including Spathiphyllum and Dieffenbachia. I will add fish probably tomorrow evening.
