-O does this software package have the ability to host a WIKI?
two things over the weekend got my attention. First was my thread about "breaking the ICK cycle" in which someone dialed 911 and it went to the answering machine. Also I noticed that there was a great deal of information on the forums but under threads that you could never guess contained the information you needed. Here at work i use WIKI's to reduce my Work Load. When some asks a Question i post the question and the answer in the wiki and then send them a link to the WIKI page. Because if one person asked you know 5 more will ask. I have been on lots of forums and they all have the same fatal flaw. organization of information for answering questions, basic questions. I think this could be a huge plus for this site... The second was id'ing plants every thread i saw the title was help id'ing plants. kind of rough to use it as a reference. comments? |

The only problem I see with that is everyone gets to post information, no matter how misleading or uninformed. Myths regarding planted tanks will flood the site from the misinformed along with the factual/scientifically tested material. It could become very confusing for noobs. Someone (or a group of someones) with intimate knowledge of various aspects of planted tanks would have to monitor and remove misleading information which will become very tedious over time. The great thing about open forums is the ability to discuss various methods and dispel myths. Another issue that comes to mind is-what works for one tank doesn't necessarily work for another tank.
I enjoy the occasional reading at aquahobby.com where members can post comments/experiences about their flora and fauna and you can see pics. I would love to see something like that site, but expanded to include many more plants and fish. Planted Tank Forum does something similar, but like aquahobby.com, it has limited species. hmmm....maybe Laura can help me design a site similar here in the US and we can post a link on APE. Creating a database for fish and plants would be huge! We are currently working on a Plant data base to ID plants and get general knowledge of the specific plants requirements and the like.
Forum upkeep is a big job on its own and I think we will just stick to that until VB comes up with something new! |
