Everything in the above post was completed today. It took me about 2 1/2 hours get all the Marselia planted, another half hour to get the anubias, ferns and moss attached to the wood. I decided to fill the back space on the right with B japonica for now, still waiting on that to come in the mail.
I like the wood for the scape I'm trying to create, but I also I agree that larger pieces could look better in a tank this size. Once the moss, anubias and ferns start to grow and fill in, you won't even notice the wood that much. Maybe next time I decide to rescape, I'll have to come dig through your pile of wood.

Here's a couple quick pics from today. I finally got all the plants I was looking for and finished planting today. Now I just sit back and wait for everything to grow.

By your request, here are the shots. And yes, that was a LOT of tweezer work. I contemplated putting in more marselia, but my sore back said there was plenty already.

Yea, my new 5' light fixture from Catalina finally arrived today. Now the entire tank gets direct light. Unfortunately, that spray bar on the right really sticks out like a sore thumb now. I'll have to play with that later tonight and see if I can rearrange it so it's more hidden in pics.

I like the Catalina lights in general. I'm still not quite convinced if they are the right choice for this tank due to the height of the tank, but they are the only affordable 5' light that I could find. Orlando and I discussed Tec lights, but they don't make 5' lights. I would have needed to buy two 3' lights at nearly double the cost of one 5' Catalina light. I was previously using a 4' light that I borrowed from my 75 gal tank, so that may have been a big factor. The tank isn't that much brighter with the new light (as expected), but the light does cover the entire tank now. To compensate for lower light levels near the substrate, I just adjusted my plant selection on this recent rescape.
The needle wheel pump is working fantastic, well worth the (sloppy wet) effort to get it installed. |
