Here's a beautiful image by Mickael Muller of Saint Omer commune in Pas-de-Calais department, France.

Stunning. That's not algae in a fetid pool. That is healthy green plant growth in full sun in the slow bend of a river. What I wouldn't do for a sample of dirt from the riverbed... ...and of course, to visit the plant life in person.

The temperate parts of the world are just as exotic as the tropical parts.

"You are much better off with no numbers than meaningless ones. The minute you believe numbers uncritically, that is, without understanding how they're calculated and how well they measure whatever they're supposed to measure, you will generate a breed of employee who will produce numbers and not results. Your data-processing system will then serve not to describe reality but to lie about it."

I would imagine the water is ice cold, perfect for a swim after a long hike.
